PPS-CF is carbon-fibre-filled polyphenylene sulfide. A maker sells it for expanded-foam mould tooling and railway parts, and makers say it resists solvents, acids and alkalis. It is semicrystalline, so it carries light load well above its glass transition: its HDT at 0.45 MPa is 251 °C. On the H2C it needs a hardened nozzle and drying at 100–140 °C, 2–12 h, and some products ask for more chamber heat than the printer reaches.

Partly documented Notched Charpy impact and price rest on 2 products each and tensile strength (Z) on 3 products. Each figure is the median of the products that publish it comparably, and beside it the middle half of them; a value on a test bar no document describes as printed, or with no stated test load, is set apart, except a heat deflection of a plastic that cannot crystallise, which its glass transition sets, unless its document points to a moulded or resin bar.

Among the materials

Against PPS-GF, PPS-CF is 76 % stiffer, 53 % more expensive and 36 % stronger flat. Against PPA-CF, PPS-CF is 19 % weaker flat, and its HDT at 0.45 MPa is 31 °C higher. Among the materials, PPS-CF has a high tensile modulus (XY), tensile strength (XY), HDT at 0.45 MPa, density and price, and a low elongation at break (XY) and notched Charpy impact: each is in the top or bottom quarter of the materials that publish it. Its tensile strength (Z) sits in the middle half.

Against its alternatives, PPS-CF has the highest HDT at 0.45 MPa and the lowest notched Charpy impact

How the numbers are worked out

Mechanical properties

Printed flat (XY), PPS-CF typically reaches a tensile strength of 87 MPa at a modulus of 8 GPa, and breaks at 2.2 % elongation. In bending, its flexural strength is typically 125 MPa at a flexural modulus of 6 GPa.

PPS-CF's products spread most in elongation at break: the middle half runs 1.4–4 %

What makers say about printing it

Nozzle wear

Printing advice

  • If higher chamber temperature and nozzle temperature were used (i.g., 90 °C and 335 °C), higher mechanical properties would be obtained, especially the Z-direction's. Bambu Lab PPS-CF, data sheet, p. 3
More from makers: moisture sensitivity, warping and shrinkage, odour and emissions and supports and removal

Moisture sensitivity

  • PPS-CF filament should always be fed to the printer in a dry container and stored in a dry cabinet to minimize absorbed moisture. Essentium PPS-CF, data sheet, p. 2

Warping and shrinkage

  • Fiberon™ PPS-CF10 is a carbon fiber reinforced PPS (Polyphenylene sulfide) filament, with minimal warping during printing and no need for a heated chamber. Polymaker FIBERON PPS CF10, data sheet, p. 1

Odour and emissions

Supports and removal

  • Otherwise, the support structure can be bonded to the model, which will make the support hard to remove. Flashforge PPS-CF, data sheet, p. 3
