PA6-CF is carbon-fibre-filled PA6, a semicrystalline polyamide. Makers sell it for fixtures, clamps and structural parts used in dry environments. Its HDT at 0.45 MPa is 193 °C, well above its glass transition. On the H2C every product needs a hardened nozzle, Bambu Lab's guide requires an enclosure, and most products call for drying at 65–110 °C, 4–12 h.

Partly documented Tensile strength (Z) and notched Charpy impact rest on 3 products each and price on 4 products. Each figure is the median of the products that publish it comparably, and beside it the middle half of them; a value on a test bar no document describes as printed, or with no stated test load, is set apart, except a heat deflection of a plastic that cannot crystallise, which its glass transition sets, unless its document points to a moulded or resin bar.

Among the materials

Against PA6-GF, PA6-CF is 56 % tougher in notched impact, 55 % more expensive and 21 % weaker across the layers. Against PPA-CF, PA6-CF is 43 % less stiff and 35 % weaker flat, and its HDT at 0.45 MPa is 27 °C lower. Among the materials, PA6-CF has a high tensile modulus (XY), tensile strength (XY), tensile strength (Z) and HDT at 0.45 MPa: each is in the top quarter of the materials that publish it. The rest of its key properties sit in the middle half.

PA6-CF is tougher in notched Charpy than PA6-GF, PPA-CF and PPS-CF but is weaker flat than PA6-GF, PPA-CF and PAHT-CF and others

Mechanical properties

Printed flat (XY), PA6-CF typically reaches a tensile strength of 70 MPa at a modulus of 4.37 GPa, and breaks at 6 % elongation. In bending, its flexural strength is typically 146 MPa at a flexural modulus of 5.18 GPa.

PA6-CF's products spread most in elongation at break: the middle half runs 4.4–10 %

Thermal properties

PA6-CF's HDT is typically 193 °C under 0.45 MPa and 164–173 °C under 1.8 MPa, with its glass transition typically at 67 °C. Semicrystalline, it carries light load well above its glass transition. As published, Vicat softening is typically 193 °C and melting typically 219 °C.

What makers say about printing it

Moisture sensitivity

  • Fiberon™ PA6-CF20 is sensitive to moisture and should always be stored and used under dry conditions (relative humidity below 20%). Polymaker FIBERON PA6 CF20, data sheet, p. 1

Warping and shrinkage

  • Printing does not require a heated chamber and no deformation occurs. Spectrum PA6 CF15, data sheet, p. 1
More from makers: nozzle wear, printing advice, supports and removal, adhesion between layers and odour and emissions

Nozzle wear

  • Note: Due to the abrasive nature of the carbon fibers, a hardened nozzle (e.g., hardened steel or ruby nozzle) is strongly recommended. Extrudr DURAPRO PA6 CF, data sheet, p. 1

Printing advice

  • Additionally, a nozzle diameter of at least 0.6 mm should be used to prevent clogging and ensure smooth extrusion. Extrudr DURAPRO PA6 CF, data sheet, p. 1

Supports and removal

  • The material is compatible with the HIPS and PVOH support materials. Spectrum PA6 CF15, data sheet, p. 1

Adhesion between layers

  • The carbon fiber reinforcement provides significantly improved stiffness, strength and heat resistance with outstanding layer adhesion. Polymaker FIBERON PA6 CF20, data sheet, p. 1

Makers rarely give the concentration, temperature or duration: treat them as indications, not design data. Each product's statements are on its card.

Resin reference data (for plain PA6, where no maker of these products speaks): it has limited resistance to steam, 100 °C and to water or aqueous solutions at high temperature; it is not resistant to steam sterilization, 134 °C, over 50 cycles (DIN 58946 parts 1-5). Fillers, pigments and printing change this, so it does not stand for these products.

Density and price
