ABS-CF is ABS filled with carbon fibre. Makers sell it for functional parts, prototypes, tooling and jigs, and mechanical engineering. Its HDT at 0.45 MPa is 90 °C, below its glass transition. On the H2C most products need a hardened nozzle, and the makers who state a chamber temperature ask for more than the H2C's heated chamber reaches.

Partly documented Notched Charpy impact rests on 1 product, price on 2 products, tensile strength (Z) on 3 products and tensile modulus (XY) on 4 products. Each figure is the median of the products that publish it comparably, and beside it the middle half of them; a value on a test bar no document describes as printed, or with no stated test load, is set apart, except a heat deflection of a plastic that cannot crystallise, which its glass transition sets, unless its document points to a moulded or resin bar.

Among the materials

Carbon fibre lowers ABS's HDT at 0.45 MPa by 5 °C: ABS-CF's HDT at 0.45 MPa is 90 °C against 95 °C. Against ABS-GF, ABS-CF is 58 % stiffer and 5 % weaker flat, and its HDT at 0.45 MPa is 8 °C lower. Among the materials, ABS-CF has a high tensile modulus (XY) and notched Charpy impact, and a low elongation at break (XY), density and price: each is in the top or bottom quarter of the materials that publish it. The rest of its key properties sit in the middle half.

Against its alternatives, ABS-CF has the highest tensile modulus

Mechanical properties

Printed flat (XY), ABS-CF typically reaches a tensile strength of 44 MPa at a modulus of 4.35 GPa, and breaks at 1.9 % elongation. In bending, its flexural strength is typically 76 MPa at a flexural modulus of 4.37 GPa.

ABS-CF's products spread most in elongation at break: the middle half runs 1.72–2.27 %

What makers say about printing it

Warping and shrinkage

  • If your device has a heated chamber, maintain temperatures between 60-80°C to help release residual stress during printing and prevent warping and cracking. Siraya Tech Fibreheart ABS CF Core, data sheet, p. 1

Nozzle wear

  • Note: Due to the abrasive nature of the carbon fibers, a hardened nozzle (e.g., hardened steel or ruby nozzle) is strongly recommended. Extrudr DURAPRO ABS CF, data sheet, p. 1
More from makers: printing advice, moisture sensitivity, odour and emissions, adhesion between layers and supports and removal

Printing advice

  • Additionally, a nozzle diameter of at least 0.6 mm should be used to prevent clogging and ensure smooth extrusion. Extrudr DURAPRO ABS CF, data sheet, p. 1

Moisture sensitivity

Odour and emissions

Adhesion between layers

  • Moreover, special fiber distribution improves the Z-direction strength and stiffness, in addition to the prolonging the life of the nozzle. Raise3D Hyper Core ABS CF15, maker's product page or guide, p. 1
