ABS is acrylonitrile butadiene styrene. Makers sell it for functional prototypes, housings, jigs and tooling. Its HDT at 0.45 MPa is 95 °C, and a part keeps about 73 % of its flat tensile strength across the layers. On the H2C it prints with a standard nozzle, but makers and Bambu Lab's Filament Guide call for an enclosure, and some products ask for more chamber heat than the H2C reaches.

Well documented 90 documents from 32 publishers, 68 of them data sheets. Each figure is the median of the products that publish it comparably, and beside it the middle half of them; a value on a test bar no document describes as printed, or with no stated test load, is set apart, except a heat deflection of a plastic that cannot crystallise, which its glass transition sets, unless its document points to a moulded or resin bar. Products with an added filler or additive, and for notched impact those sold as toughened, are shown but kept out of the medians.

Among the materials

Against ABS-CF, ABS is 49 % less stiff, 22 % weaker flat and 11 % less expensive. Against ABS-GF, ABS is 3.1 times as tough in notched impact, 26 % weaker flat and 20 % less stiff. Among the materials, ABS has a high notched Charpy impact and a low tensile strength (XY), density and price: each is in the top or bottom quarter of the materials that publish it. The rest of its key properties sit in the middle half.

Against its alternatives, ABS has the lowest tensile strength

Mechanical properties

Printed flat (XY), ABS typically reaches a tensile strength of 34.5 MPa at a modulus of 2.2 GPa, and breaks at 10 % elongation. In bending, its flexural strength is typically 62.5 MPa at a flexural modulus of 2.05 GPa.

ABS's products spread most in elongation at break: the middle half runs 5.77–11 %

The middle half of the products under each median. The share is each product's Z value as a part of its XY value, from one sheet and one state, and the median of those shares. Where it counts fewer products than the Z median, the others publish no flat value of the same test from the same sheet; the figure's table names them. How XY and Z differ.

What makers say about printing it

Warping and shrinkage

  • ABSx has low warping and odor characteristics to enhance your printing experience even on printers without an enclosure. Nobufil ABSx, data sheet, p. 1

Printing advice

  • To improve the print quality of ABS material, there are two suggestions: use a medium to large fan to accelerate cooling and minimize overhang angles in the model structure, or print at a high bed temperature to reduce warping. eSUN ABS+, data sheet, p. 4

On ABS in general

  • Large thermal gradients cause warping; heated enclosure and emission control matter. Warping / emissions after Prusa Research, ABS | Prusa Knowledge Base
More from makers: moisture sensitivity, adhesion between layers, nozzle wear, odour and emissions and supports and removal

Moisture sensitivity

  • It is recommended to use together with eBOX during printing. eSUN eABS Max, data sheet, p. 2

Adhesion between layers

  • good interlayer adhesion, especially using 3D printer with heated chamber Spectrum Smart ABS, data sheet, p. 1

Nozzle wear

Odour and emissions

  • It contains low VOC (Volatile Organic Compounds) components, resulting in a reduced odor during the printing process, making it more comfortable and stress-free. eSUN eABS HS, data sheet, p. 1

Supports and removal

  • QIDI ABS can be used together with QIDI S-White Quick-Remove Support Material to solve the poor surface of complex model above supports. QIDI ABS, data sheet, p. 2
