PA12-GF is glass-fibre-filled polyamide 12. A maker sells it for functional parts and for parts that absorb kinetic energy or repeated shock, and a maker stresses its very low moisture absorption. Its HDT at 0.45 MPa is 150–150 °C. On the H2C it prints at 255–270 °C and needs a hardened nozzle, and a sheet asks for more chamber heat than the H2C reaches.

Thinly documented Three products, with values from three makers' documents: 3DXTECH's, MatterHackers's and Fiberlogy's. No document describes its impact bars as printed, so notched Charpy impact is shown as published and not ranked against other materials. Read each figure as a few sheets' word.

Among the materials

Among the materials, PA12-GF has a high tensile modulus (XY), tensile strength (XY) and price, and a low density: each is in the top or bottom quarter of the materials that publish it. Its elongation at break (XY) and HDT at 0.45 MPa sit in the middle half.

Against its alternatives, PA12-GF has the highest tensile modulus and tensile strength

How does it compare with what an engineer would buy instead?

PA12-GF publishes no tensile strength (Z). Its notched Charpy impact states no orientation, so it is drawn as published.

How the numbers are worked out

Mechanical properties

Printed flat (XY), PA12-GF typically reaches a tensile strength of 82 MPa at a modulus of 7.8 GPa, and breaks at 4.5 % elongation. In bending, its flexural strength is typically 94 MPa at a flexural modulus of 7.55 GPa.

Printing on the H2C

PA12-GF's heated chamber runs past what the H2C gives

What does printing it on the H2C take, and how hot can a part get?

  • share of the products that accept each temperature
  • what most products accept
  • one end given ("at least")
  • the H2C's limit, and beyond it
  • a product
  • PA12-GF: its products' median and middle half
  • as published, under each sheet's own test
