PETG is glycol-modified polyethylene terephthalate. Makers sell it for functional prototypes, fixtures and outdoor accessories. Its HDT at 0.45 MPa is 70 °C, below its glass transition. On the H2C it prints at 230–255 °C with a standard nozzle and no heated chamber, and most products call for drying.

Well documented 127 documents from 34 publishers, 95 of them data sheets. Each figure is the median of the products that publish it comparably, and beside it the middle half of them; a value on a test bar no document describes as printed, or with no stated test load, is set apart, except a heat deflection of a plastic that cannot crystallise, which its glass transition sets, unless its document points to a moulded or resin bar. Products with an added filler or additive, and for notched impact those sold as toughened, are shown but kept out of the medians.

Among the materials

Against PETG-CF, PETG is 54 % less stiff, 37 % less expensive and 25 % less tough in notched impact. Against PETG-GF, PETG is 28 % less stiff and 14 % stronger across the layers. Among the materials, PETG has a low tensile modulus (XY), HDT at 0.45 MPa and price: each is in the lowest quarter of the materials that publish it. The rest of its key properties sit in the middle half.

Against its alternatives, PETG has the lowest tensile modulus and price

Mechanical properties

Printed flat (XY), PETG typically reaches a tensile strength of 47 MPa at a modulus of 1.69 GPa, and breaks at 8.6 % elongation. In bending, its flexural strength is typically 70 MPa at a flexural modulus of 1.93 GPa.

PETG's products spread most in elongation at break: the middle half runs 6.8–13 %

What makers say about printing it

Printing advice

  • Appropriate selection of the height allows to minimize the effect of thread pulling and polymer accumulation around the nozzle. Prusa Research Buddy3D PET-G, data sheet, p. 2

Warping and shrinkage

On PETG in general

  • Glossy appearance and low warping; fine detail and support release are less favourable than PLA. Finish / detail after Prusa Research, PETG | Prusa Knowledge Base
  • Tune cooling and retraction for stringing and detail; cooling can trade against interlayer bonding. Cooling / stringing after Prusa Research, PETG | Prusa Knowledge Base
More from makers: moisture sensitivity, odour and emissions, adhesion between layers, nozzle wear and supports and removal

Moisture sensitivity

Odour and emissions

Adhesion between layers

  • Ideal extruder temp is 260 to 280°C, or higher depending on your printer / thermocouple set-up – some users report requiring temps up to 290°C to obtain optimal layer bonding. 3DXTECH 3DXPRO LG PETG, maker's product page or guide, p. 1

Nozzle wear

Supports and removal

  • PVA is the recommended support material for PETG, although SR-30 can also be used when working with the 2XA extruder. UltiMaker MakerBot PETG, data sheet, p. 1
