POM / Acetal is polyoxymethylene, also called acetal. Makers sell it for functional technical parts, snap connections and gears. It is semicrystalline. On the H2C most products print at 220–240 °C, but some ask for more bed heat than the H2C gives, and a maker warns that formaldehyde is released if the processing temperature is too high.

Thinly documented Three products, with values from 4 makers' documents. No document describes its heat deflection bars as printed, so HDT at 0.45 MPa is shown as published and not ranked against other materials. Read each figure as a few sheets' word.

Among the materials

Against PLA, POM / Acetal is 28 % stronger flat. Against OBC, POM / Acetal is 4.8 times as strong flat. Among the materials, POM / Acetal has a high elongation at break (XY) and density: both are in the top quarter of the materials that publish them. The rest of its key properties sit in the middle half.

Against its alternatives, POM has the highest tensile strength

POM publishes no tensile strength (Z) or notched Charpy impact. Its HDT at 0.45 MPa states no orientation, so it is drawn as published.

How the numbers are worked out

Mechanical properties

Printed flat (XY), POM / Acetal typically reaches a tensile strength of 57.5 MPa at a modulus of 1.87 GPa, and breaks at 23 % elongation. In bending, its flexural strength is typically 84 MPa at a flexural modulus of 2.45 GPa.

Printing on the H2C

POM's heated chamber runs past what the H2C gives

What does printing it on the H2C take, and how hot can a part get?

  • share of the products that accept each temperature
  • what most products accept
  • the H2C's limit, and beyond it
  • a product
  • POM: its products' median and middle half
  • as published, under each sheet's own test

Makers rarely give the concentration, temperature or duration: treat them as indications, not design data. Each product's statements are on its card.

Where no maker of these products speaks to an exposure, reference data for plain POM resin is shown. Fillers, pigments and printing change it, so it does not stand for these products.

Estimated values

No product publishes a HDT at 0.45 MPa that can be ranked, so the selector estimates it from the products' related values and similar materials. An estimate is a range, never a product's value, and nothing above rests on it.
