OBC is an olefin block copolymer, a polyolefin whose glass transition is -13 °C. Makers sell it for low warpage, chemical resistance, and impact and wear resistance. On the H2C the sheets that state a chamber say none is needed, and its sheets give a bed window of 90–105 °C.

Among the materials

Against PLA, OBC is 73 % weaker flat and 64 % weaker across the layers. Against POM / Acetal, OBC is 79 % weaker flat. Among the materials, OBC has a high elongation at break (XY) and notched Charpy impact, and a low tensile modulus (XY), tensile strength (XY), tensile strength (Z) and density: each is in the top or bottom quarter of the materials that publish it.

Against its alternatives, OBC has the lowest tensile modulus and tensile strength

Mechanical properties

Printed flat (XY), OBC typically reaches a tensile strength of 12 MPa at a modulus of 200 MPa, and breaks at 455 % elongation. In bending, its flexural strength is typically 7.8 MPa at a flexural modulus of 244 MPa.

The middle half of the products under each median. The share is each product's Z value as a part of its XY value, from one sheet and one state, and the median of those shares. Where it counts fewer products than the Z median, the others publish no flat value of the same test from the same sheet; the figure's table names them. How XY and Z differ.

Thermal properties

Its glass transition is -13 °C. As published, Vicat softening is 98 °C, from one product and melting typically 130 °C.

What makers say about printing it

From makers: warping and shrinkage and odour and emissions

Warping and shrinkage

  • Low warpage – faster startup and less fine tuning Dow EVOLV3D OBC, data sheet, p. 1
  • This material demonstrates significantly improved warpage and printability for a polyolefin, enabling lightweight, durable parts with excellent chemical resistance. Dow EVOLV3D OBC, data sheet, p. 1

Odour and emissions

  • Recommended to be printed in ventilated area Dow EVOLV3D OBC, data sheet, p. 1

Makers rarely give the concentration, temperature or duration: treat them as indications, not design data. Each product's statements are on its card.

Resin reference data (for plain OBC, where no maker of these products speaks): it resists sodium hydroxide, 50 % (aqueous bases). Fillers, pigments and printing change this, so it does not stand for these products.

Its three products give a density of 900–905 kg/m³. No OBC product has a price in the sample.
