ABS-ESD is electrostatic-dissipative acrylonitrile butadiene styrene. Makers sell it for prototypes, end-use parts and protecting electronics, and a maker advises against insulating paints, which would spoil its ESD properties. Its HDT at 0.45 MPa is 97 °C. On the H2C it prints at 260–265 °C, but most products call for drying, and a maker says it absorbs moisture easily.

Partly documented Tensile strength (Z) and price rest on 2 products each and notched Charpy impact is not published. Each figure is the median of the products that publish it comparably, and beside it the middle half of them; a value on a test bar no document describes as printed, or with no stated test load, is set apart, except a heat deflection of a plastic that cannot crystallise, which its glass transition sets, unless its document points to a moulded or resin bar.

Among the materials

Against ABS-CF, ABS-ESD is 5.0 times as expensive, 51 % less stiff and 26 % weaker across the layers. Against ABS-GF, ABS-ESD is 29 % weaker across the layers, 25 % weaker flat and 23 % less stiff. Among the materials, ABS-ESD has a high price and a low tensile strength (XY), tensile strength (Z) and density: each is in the top or bottom quarter of the materials that publish it. The rest of its key properties sit in the middle half.

Against its alternatives, ABS-ESD has the highest price and the lowest tensile strength and tensile strength (Z)

Mechanical properties

Printed flat (XY), ABS-ESD typically reaches a tensile strength of 35 MPa at a modulus of 2.13 GPa, and breaks at 4.4 % elongation. In bending, its flexural strength is typically 62 MPa at a flexural modulus of 2.31 GPa.

ABS-ESD's products spread most in tensile modulus: the middle half runs 1.66–2.27 GPa

No ABS-ESD product publishes tensile modulus both flat and across the layers from one sheet. Tensile strength: one more product is in the median across the layers but gives no share, with no flat value of the same test from the same sheet: iSANMATE ESD ABS (tensile break strength flat, tensile strength (yield or break not stated) across).

Where it counts fewer products than the Z median, the others publish no flat value of the same test from the same sheet; the figure's table names them. How XY and Z differ.

What makers say about printing it

Moisture sensitivity

  • As the ESD ABS filament absorbs moisture easily, it should be dried before being used. Flashforge ESD ABS, data sheet, p. 3
  • Drying Recommendations: 80°C, 2-4 hours 3D4Makers ABSESD, maker's product page or guide, p. 1
More from makers: odour and emissions, printing advice, warping and shrinkage and supports and removal

Odour and emissions

  • Thanks to this advanced production process, the residual amounts of solvents and monomers used in the production process in the final ABS product are extremely low, so the consumables are printed The process has low odor. iSANMATE ESD ABS, data sheet, p. 1
